01 How it works

  1. Choose the files to compare.
  2. Compare their SHA-256 hashes.
  3. Download the duplicate report.

02 Good to know

Duplicate detection compares file contents by hash, not names. Only the selected files are considered; this tool does not scan folders on its own. Up to 1,000 files and 1 GiB total.

03Compare selected files and folders for duplicate content

Choose files or folders to compare. Forkgen calculates SHA-256 hashes for the selected contents and groups files whose hashes match. Review the report before deciding what to keep.

Names and folder locations do not determine a match. Files with different names can contain identical bytes, while files with the same name can contain different content.

04Review before removing anything

Use the report to compare each group's filenames and locations in your file manager. The tool does not delete, move, or modify your files, so you remain in control of cleanup.

A matching SHA-256 hash is a practical way to identify identical file content. If the decision has high consequences, check important files with a trusted local process before deleting a copy.

05Selection and size limits

The tool checks selected files and the contents of folders you choose. It does not scan your device automatically. The selection is limited to 1,000 files and 1 GiB total.

06 Questions

Does the duplicate finder compare file names?

No. It compares SHA-256 content hashes. Different names may still have identical content.

Will it delete duplicate files?

No. It creates a report so you can review and remove files yourself.

Does it scan folders automatically?

No. Choose a folder to include its contents in the comparison; the tool does not scan your device on its own.

Can two matching hashes prove files are identical?

The tool treats matching SHA-256 hashes as duplicate content. For especially important decisions, confirm the files with a trusted local method before deleting one.
