Image optimizer for PNG, JPEG, WebP and AVIF

Use the image optimizer to compare the recognized original with PNG, JPEG, WebP and AVIF re-encodings, then download the smallest candidate. Free to use, with no sign-up required.

01 How it works

  1. Choose a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or AVIF image.
  2. Set quality for lossy candidates.
  3. Download the smallest candidate.

02 Good to know

The original is considered only when its MIME type or extension identifies PNG, JPEG, WebP, or AVIF; if chosen, its bytes, metadata, and transparency are preserved. JPEG output is lossy and flattens transparency to white. Re-encoded WebP and AVIF may be lossy and preserve transparency; PNG is lossless and preserves transparency. Re-encoded candidates omit source metadata. Browser support affects which formats can be encoded.

03How the image optimizer compares file sizes

The optimizer considers the recognized original plus supported encodings and selects the candidate with the fewest bytes. The original is eligible only when its MIME type or extension identifies PNG, JPEG, WebP, or AVIF.

A smaller file is not automatically a better image. JPEG and some WebP or AVIF candidates can lose detail, and the tool compares byte size rather than visual quality. Inspect the selected result before using it.

04Know what the selected candidate keeps

If the original wins, its bytes, metadata, and transparency remain intact. Re-encoded PNG is lossless; JPEG flattens transparency onto white. Re-encoded candidates omit source metadata, and browser encoder support affects which candidates are available.

05 Questions

Does the smallest candidate always look best?

No. The comparison is by file size, not visual quality. Review the downloaded image at its intended display size.

Can the optimizer select the original file?

Yes, when its recognized type is PNG, JPEG, WebP, or AVIF and its bytes are smaller than the supported re-encodings.

Will metadata be preserved?

Only when the original file is selected. Re-encoded candidates omit source metadata.
